Department of Conservation have been given, committee (Tawapata South Inc) permission, for the following trips:
January 2023
Trip 1 – Sunday 15th to Thursday 29th January for a tūturuatu translocation.
The trip is to translocate tūturuatu from the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch to Waikawa island and to undertake biosecurity checks/service traps. The translocation will improve the genetic diversity of tūturuatu on Waikawa.
Team 1 – An aviary team would like to set up the aviary (big tent, very temporary for translocation ONLY) between the 15th and 17th January, a DOC team of 2 persons, plus 2 volunteers.
Team 2 – A translocation team would like to look after the translocated tūturuatu in the aviary from 17th January to the 25th of January, a DOC team of 2 persons.
Team 3 – The post-release monitoring team would like to monitor the tūturuatu after release from the aviary and would include a DOC team of 2 persons, between 25th and 29th January.
DOC would like to transport the team on and off the island via boat, using the DOC vessel, Matahourua, which would have a crew of one or two DOC staff on board. If the weather is unsuitable for the boat, the backup plan would be to transport the team by helicopter.
February 2023
Trip 1 – Thursday, 9th February to Friday, 10th February overnight for biosecurity checks, tracking tunnel checks and tūturuatu roll call. The team would consist of a DOC team of 2, plus 3 volunteers. DOC will transport the team on and off the island via boat, using the DOC vessel, Matahourua, which would have a crew of DOC team of 2. The backup plan would be to transport by helicopter.
Trip 2 – Thursday 23rd February to Friday 24th February for biosecurity checks and monitoring tūturuatu breeding. The team would consist of a DOC team of 2, plus 2 volunteers to assist with trapping. We would like to transport the team on and off the island via boat, using the DOC vessel, Matahourua, which would have a crew of DOC team of 2. The backup plan would be to transport by helicopter.
